On this unique program in the Peruvian Andes you will be living and working with the Andean people in the mountain village of Vicos. The people of Vicos have had little to no interaction with outsiders and have maintained their traditional customs as well as their language, Quechua. However, the popularity of the region for alpine climbing and its close proximity to Huascaran National Park are bringing change to the area. In an attempt to create locally organized and operated sustainable tourism, the people of Vicos are interested in setting up their own community based ecotourism programs and we have been invited to assist them.
Your days in the village will be spent meeting and working with local community members on a service project of their choice. In addition, there will be time for meeting with local weavers, carvers, beekeepers, farmers and other families who wish to share stories. You will also be involved in the daily activities of your host family, which might include making bread, working in the fields, attending tribal council meetings or joining in on festival celebrations. Evenings will be spent learning Quechua language, music, dancing and story time around the fire. We will eat and live in the local way. The conditions are simple yet comfortable, and the food is nourishing and grown locally. After our home stay, we will expore the magnificent ancient capitol of Cusco with its narrow streets and rich history followed by several days in the Sacred Valley of the Inca exploring ruins and visiting colorful markets.
We will also hike a portion of the ancient Inca Trail to visit the spectacular Machu Picchu. To top off this amazing adventure, we will spend our final four days in the southern desert relaxing at a friends country lodge, drinking his hand crafted wines and pisco and exploring old pre-Incan tombs, Huari petroglyphs and white water rafting the Majes River through this picturesque valley.
